Peter Cserhati

was born in 1940 in Budapest, Hungary. As a young adolescent he became profoundly affected by nature, the world of colours, and classical music. At this time he was also a member of an amateur choir. In 1958 he graduated from the Fine and Applied Arts School in Budapest, where he studied drawing and decorative wood-sculpting. Independently he also pursued painting, first in watercolour and then later in oil.

Upon graduation, he was rewarded a diploma in decorative wood sculpture and began to earn his living in Budapest as a decorative wood sculptor. He also remained active in painting and sculpting (clay) as a member the Guttenberg and Derkovits art groups, as well as attending the summer school in Zebegeny.

In 1969 he was granted the distinction of Master Woodcarver and in the same year escaped with his wife from communist Hungary. They settled in Toronto, Canada where he established his own company in designing and carving residential, institutional, and church interiors. They have three children and a grandson.

The form of his artwork is primarily that of painting (watercolour and mostly in oil) and wood-sculpting (plaque, relief, sculpting).

“The gift of life is, if we are able to create through our own individuality a thought, a feeling, that delights and lifts the human spirit.”
